From the introduction: "Entries are presented in chronological sequence, beginning with codices produced for ecclesiastical use between the ninth and the early thirteenth century (Cat. nos. 1-14). The next group, which consists of Bibles of various formats and degrees of luxury, reflects the increased demand for this text inspired in large part by the emphasis on biblical studies at the University of Paris from the early thirteenth century.
