Taché was one of the Catholic clergy leading the legal and political battle to protect Manitobans' right to publicly-funded French Catholic schooling; the first period of the Manitoba Schools Crisis played out between 1890, when Manitoba attempted to abolish French as an official language and the established dual school system; and 1896, when the issue was, for the time, settled by the Laurier-Greenway comprimise.
