RÉMUSAT, Claire de] A Selection from the Letters of Madame de Rémusat to her Husband and Son, from 1804 to 1814. From the French by Mrs. Cashel Hoey and Mr. John Lillie.
London: Sampson Low, Marston, Searle, and Rivington: 1881 first English edition tall 8vo. xxviii, 434pp.
The three volumes uniformly and very attractively bound in high quality near contemporary half blue crushed morocco, spines panelled by gilt decorated raised bands, direct lettered gilt, top edges gilt, marbled sides and matching end papers,

Claire de Rémusat, (1780-1821), née Vengennes, educational writer, married when only sixteen years old a government administrator. Shortly after her husband was appointed in 1802 Prefect of the Palace she was appointed lady-in-waiting to Empress Josephine and she became an habituée of the Parisian salons of the imperial era. She kept in touch with this milieu, a milieu which is vividly evoked in these Memoirs, after her husband was posted away from Paris, and she accompanied Josephine after the latter's divorce. Her correspondence "upon politics and society ... gives the most original and truthful picture of the time - a time about which France has not yet lost interest, and to which the liberal party, still in shadow, has always referred its origin" [preface]. She wrote the posthumously published Essai sur l'education des femmes which was intended "to help women achieve usefulness and dignity through domestic competence" [Claire Moses].
Frances Sarah Hoey (1830-1908), née Johnston, novelist and translator, was born at Bushy Park, Dublin. In 1858 she married the well-known Dundalk-born journalist and author, John Cashel Hoey and became a Catholic. She published numerous novels and translated twenty-seven works from French and Italian.
