Publisher's advertisements on 12 unpaginated pages following text. First edition, which was published simultaneously in London, with slight changes, by R. Bentley, as Narrative of a Residence at the Court of London. American Imprints, 21026; Howes, R522. Gift inscription on title page: "To Elisa W. D?? From L.C. Woodruff 1890." Small label of former owner George W. Dix on front fixed endpaper. Richard Rush (1780-1859) was an American lawyer and diplomat, son of Benjamin Rush and Julia Stockton Rush. After serving in a number of other offices, he became secretary of state under President James Monroe. In 1817 he was named minister to Great Britain. This volume covers his arrival in England and the beginning of his tenure as minister, from Nov. 1817 to Jan. 1819. The first edition is much scarcer than the second edition published the same year by Key and Biddle in Philadelphia. In Good Condition: fraying at spine ends; cloth is partially separated along back joint; spine is faded; boards are rubbed; boards are separating from text block; light foxing and staining throughout; otherwise clean.
