The author gives interesting and detailed observations on the hazardous conditions in hospitals at the time of the French invasion of Portugal until the arrival of Wellington's troops. Pp. 223-364 reproduce documents in support of his cause. He was a physician appointed to inspect military hospitals in 1801, but was imprisoned by the Inquisition in 1809 for his involvement with freemasonry. Innocêncio I, 380, "pouco vulgar." A nice copy of the first edition of both works. There are 4 later editions, the last in 1805. The author, "ancien chirurgien-major de la Marine" was a great advocate of catheterisation. According to a contemporary review, the work on urology has some interesting point of views, but written in a horible style.
