All edges gilt. viii, 304pp. One of the annual gift books containing poems, prose, and short stories by various authors on the subject of slavery which were compiled by Boston abolitionist Maria Weston Chapman. The books were one of the items sold at annual bazaars that were major fundraisers for the Boston Female Anti-Slavery Society, This volume contains writings by William Lloyd Garrison, John Quincy Adams, Edmund Quincy, James Russell Lowell, Maria Lowell, Edmund Jackson, Wendell Phillips, David Lee Child, Joseph Mazzini, and many others. First edition, first printing, 1865, softcover pamphlet in good condition. 30 pages plus blank plus wraps. In original paper wraps. No writing inside or out. Edges are chipped, ink stain upper outer edge not affecting text, pages are toned, corners bumped. Author put together this pamphlet to encourage the public to encourage the Union Navy to consider his designs for a warship. Scarce. None listed for sale; none found at auction. Morris has pasted to the front end papers a contemporary newspaper article with the obituary of General I. N. Stiles, with his manuscript inscription, first in pencil and then in ink -"I. N. Stiles was the adjt. of the 20th Ind. at organization. Gen. I.N. Stiles was a good friend to me when I was under Comand(sic) in N.C. in 1865. Impassioned speech condemning the recently passed federal Fugitive Slave Law, delivered at Boston’s Melodeon Theater, Sunday, September 22, 1850 by celebrated reformer Theodore Parker who, although an ordained Unitarian minister, later rejected much of Unitarian theology and dedicated himself to Transcendentalism, becoming a leading figure in the movement. Parker’s views were wont to create considerable conflict in both religious and secular circles, as here where he advocates the murder of officers of the law by their captured fugitive slaves as justifiable under the guise of self-defense. Florence's father, Arthur Holbrook (1842-1917) was the author of With the Fifth Wisconsin at Williamsburg. During the Civil War, Dr. Arthur Holbrook, D.D.S., enlisted in Co F, 5th Wisconsin Infantry. At first a Sergeant, he later became 1st Lieutenant and belonged to Co. A, 28th Wisconsin Infantry. Still later he was Adjutant of the 39 Wisconsin Infantry. Brigadier General Charles King served in the Wisconsin National Guard from 1882 until 1897, becoming Adjutant General in 1895. In 1898, he was appointed brigadier general of volunteers and sailed to the Philippines during the Spanish–American War. This Book is in Acceptable Condition. The Gray Buckram Boards have Light Rubbing and Light Edgewear but No Tears, Creases, Stains, or Any Major Damage. The Binding is Strong and Intact but with Slight Sagging, typical in such a Large Book. The Interior is Clean and Unmarked (other than the Partially Marked-Out Author's Signature and Inscription) with No Writing, Highlighting, or Underlining and have Occasional Very Light Foxing but No Tears, Creases, Stains, or Other Major Damage. The Interior does have a Slight Musty Odor, though the Musty Odor is not overpowering, it and Foxing are the only reasons this Book is only in Acceptable Condition.
