Spine lettering perished, inner hinges cracked but holding, else a very good copy, covers and text fresh and clean. First edition. Illustrated (with a frontispiece portrait of Fanny J. Crosby, and full-page plates reproducing black-and-white photographs). 253 pp. 1 vols. 8vo. INSCRIBED TO ACTIVIST MRS E.M. WHITTEMORE. Fanny J. Crosby (1820-1915), a blind poet, lyricist and composer, was an American Methodist rescue mission worker, born in Brewster, New York. She lost her sight at six weeks of age, and died at age ninety-four. She wrote four collections of poetry, and two autobiographies; her first book was A Blind Girl and Other Poems (1844).

Inscribed, and signed, by Fanny J. Crosby to a friend and activist: "Fanny J. Crosby With love, to Mrs. Whittemore" (on the front flyleaf).
An association copy; the text includes an account of the author's reminiscences of meeting "Mrs. E. M. Whittemore, the founder of the Door of Hope for unprotected girls. I was at once wonderfully impressed by the earnestness of this remarkable lady" (p. 148).
