William McCabe was born near Richmond in 1841, graduated from the University of Virginia and immediately enlisted in the Confederare army in 1861. He served throughout the war mostly as captain of artillery. During the war he contribute many poems to southern magazines in an effort to bolster morale and after became a noted educator and writer.
