Sobre este artículo
Reading Copy. This is the 1943 English language translation of the 1939 French novel "Les Javanais" [The Javanese] by Jean Malaquais (1908-1998) (pen name of Vladimir Jan Pavel Israel Pinkus Malacki). The author was awarded the 1939 Rinaudot Prize for this novel.
Per a review by Benjamin Ivry: the novel is a "gritty narrative based on slang terms of popular speech" about 200 workers, mostly foreigners, employed for the grueling mining work in a British-owned lead and silver mine in the south of France.
Per Andre Gide letter to the author: the novel has "an epic grandeur, at once comical and tragic..."
Per Leon Trotsky's review: the novel "never lapsed into propaganda."
