London: Satchell, 1880. First edition.. Original dark green cloth, spine lettered in gilt. Yellow coated end papers. 223pp. Wear to spine ends and tips, inner hinges cracked, child's name on front flyleaf, generally a very good copy otherwise. Four stories, the last of which is titled: The Troubles Of An Automaton. This is the first book edition of her first published story, which appeared in the New Quarterly Magazine, July 1876. Clementina Maria Black was a feminist and social activist, active in the Fabian Society and women's suffrage campaigns. A very scarce book of short stories.
