Bayo was a Cuban-born poet and military leader who fought for the Loyalists on the the losing side of the Spanish Civil War. Following the war, he relocated to Mexico, and later became a mentor for and military trainer Fidel Castro and Che Guevara (whom he described as his best pupil).
