Spring Books, London, 1965. First Edition. Hardcover (Original Cloth). Good Condition/Fair. 44 pages of text then 53 pages of illustrations, introduction by author, acknowledgements, biographical list of works, Michelangelo in contemporary writings and notes on illustrations. Illustrated frontispiece, being a coloured foldout illustration the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel. The text is illustrated with 53 coloured plates of Michelangelo's work and a few black-and-white illustrations. Tan coloured boards with gilt facsimile of Michelangelo's signature on the front panel and gilt writing on the spine. Bumping to the head and to the heel of the spine and shelfwear to both the top and bottom book edges. Foxing is noted to the top book edge, and a few marks to the book panels and the spine is very slightly cocked. Offset tanning to the endpapers along with browning to both the endpapers and internal pages. Original book seller's sticker to be lower right-hand corner of the front paste down. Photographic dustwrapper, showing a piece of Michelangelo statuary on the front panel and a reproduction of a panel of the Sistine Chapel on the rear panel. White and black writing on the front panel and black on the spine. The dustwrapper is rubbed and faded and the spine has become quite yellowed and grubby. Rubbing and chipping to the dustwrapper corners and to the edges. There is a 1.25 " tear to the top right-hand corner of the front panel with associated creasing. Some browning to the verso of the fold over panels of the dustwrapper. A book on one of the greatest, acknowledged both in his time and our time, Renaissance artists -- Michelangelo.
