Good. 2 volumes in 1 ; 17 cm. ; OCLC: 43360329 ; contemporary banded leather, peeling at spine ; This is the complete collection of the 85 issued numbers of van Effen's Le Misantrope, considered the first magazine to be published in Europe, patterned on that of The Spectator of Addison and Steele ; Justus van Effen was born in Utrecht, and after a botched attempt to complete a scientific degree at the University of Utrecht, as well as a couple of wild love affairs, he made his way to London where he spent much time in the company of the literary circles that frequented the then-scandalous coffee houses ; upon his return to the Netherlands, he eventually makes his way to the Hague, where he is employed for a time. Here he publishes the magazine in numbers written anonymously, selling for half a stuiver. Although the magazine fails after just two years, and van Effen goes on to publish other, more lavish serial publications, this remains his most important contribution. After much acclaim in his later years, and after arranging for the livelihood of his mistress and illegitimate children by a deathbed marriage, van Effen died of cancer in Den Bosch on September 18, 1735 ; G
