New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1898. Illustrated by "author designs and photographic illustrations" in b&w: tissue frontis. First edition. Blue/green cloth, gilt print spine and topboard dentelles, gilt-framed and decorated cameo red-tone paste-on, thick paper issue, moire end papers, untrimmed, teg. 8vo. pp. [xiv], 208. Near Fine/No jacket, as issued. Gilt title line "Miss America" faded on spine and several other gilt edge letters; internally fine. A well done sociological study on American 'type' women, at the end of the 19th century through essays and photos. Black was the inventor of the pre-cinema "Picture Play" debuting in 1894 entitled Miss Gerry where over 100 glass slides were taken posed in progressive positions (much like Nick Park's clay figure Wallace and Grommit are produced today)..
