New York: The Dryden Press, 1943. First Edition. Hardcover. Inscribed on the front flyleaf by William Artis (1914-77), the African American sculptor, whose work is featured in this book. Groundbreaking historical study of African American art from slavery to the early 20th century. The first major text of its kind following Alain Locke's The New Negro (1925), it was the main source of information on African American artists until comparable historical surveys were published in the 1970s. The book presents an overview of artists' biographies with analysis of the style and subject matter of their work. Octavo: viii, 272 p. with numerous illustrations. Original gray cloth binding, with black titles. Light dust staining to the top edge. The spine is leaning just a touch, with some general edgewear to the boards. In the uncommon dust jacket, which is faded along the spine with some moderate shelfwear and a few tape mends.
