Sobre este artículo

From the Lorenzo Press of E. Bronson, Philadelphia: ., 1806 pp. xxxii, (1)-271 + Two plates engraved by Samuel Seymour (active 1796-1823). Foxed. One plate loose and inserted. Early manuscript ownership of Thomas Rutherford on title page. First signature loose. 210 mm. Original full leather binding, worn; boards detached. Hardbound. Good. New Hampshire born Thomas Green Fessenden (1771-1837) went to London in 1801 as agent for a new hydraulic machine. The enterprise proved a failure and involved him in pecuniary difficulties. While in London, he became interested in the construction of a patent mill on the River Thames, and in this enterprise also he was completely ruined. At this time, he formed the acquaintance of Benjamin & Elisha Perkins (1741-1799), patentees of a metallic medical tractor. Fessenden advertised it in a Hudibrastic verse poem 'Terrible Tractoration' (anonymously published in 1803). The poem satirized the members of the medical profession who opposed the use of the instruments. Nathaniel Hawthorne characterized the poem as 'a work of strange, grotesque ideas, aptly expressed'. The poem was enlarged with notes and arguments, and republished in New York and Philadelphia in 1806. S&S/AI 10410. PAIMP 20 x2?. Hardcover.
