The tri-color front cover is printed on 80# card stock and has been protected with a vinyl sheet. Among the subjects included are: Physical features, weather and location; Indians who frequented the area; Explorers including Martin Chartier, Daniel Boone, John Stewart and others; A list of early settlers; Early houses; Migration from Monroe County; Early Tompkinsville; Political history; War of 1812; War with Mexico in 1847; the Civil War -- including invasions in the Tompkinsville area by Union and Confederate forces under Major Thomas Jordan and Col. John Hunt Morgan, respectively, and the burning of Monroe County court house and other buildings; World War I, World War II, the Korean Conflict and Viet Nam with lists of those who died from Monroe County; Transportation and Communication; the Cumberland River, including a list of steamboats; Newspapers; Postmasters; Churches; Maps; Schools; Doctors; Monroe County War Memorial Hospital; Gamaliel and Fountain Run; Agriculture and Industry; the Negro community; Oil strikes; Disasters, including a poem called The Tompkinsville Tornado"; County officials; Clubs and Organizations; Banks; Fire Department; References; Ourstandng Citizens; the Flippin Tulip Poplar; Old Mulkey Meeting House State Park, and other interesting tidbits of local history.
