Sobre este artículo

TARKINGTON, Booth. Monsieur Beaucaire. Illustrated by C. D. Williams. 12mo, original gold stamped lettered red cloth, pp. [8], [128[, + 6 inserted plates (including frontispiece) in sepia with decorative green borders, t.e.g., uncut. New York: McClure, Phillips & Co., 1900.

First Edition, first issue. Tarkington's second book is a novel about a mysterious French gambler in 18th century Bath, England. He has inscribed it on verso of the frontispiece: "Inscribed for Mr H. Kauti, Booth Tarkington, Sept. 22, 1941." "Kauti" was, in fact, New York bookseller G. A. Van Nosdall, a famous faker in the book world who send books to authors for inscription under his fake name, and then sell them as association copies. Probably inscribed at Kennebunkport, Maine. The book was a success, and was successfully turned into a play, opera, and a film starring Rudolph Valentino. The decorations are by Charles Edward Hooper, and include end-papers , title-page, dedication page, list of illustrations, and half-title. Each chapter has a decorative head and tail-piece except chapter five which has no tail-piece. Nearly fine, in 1/4 red morocco slipcase, with inner chemise. Russo, pp. 6-9. Johnson, p. 489.

Sinopsis

The young Frenchman did very well what he had planned to do. His guess that the Duke would cheat proved good. As the unshod half-dozen figures that had been standing noiselessly in the entryway stole softly into the shadows of the chamber, he leaned across the table and smilingly plucked a card out of the big Englishman's sleeve.
