Frontispiece (included in pagination) and in-text illustrations throughout. titles stamped in gilt on the spine, boards with blind-ruled borders; all text block edges trimmed. minor wear to the spine ends and corners, internally clean and tight. Very good, tight and attractive copy of a book regarded as "the first, the longest, and the best of modern English detective novels" (T. S. Eliot, quoted in David, The Cambridge Companion to the Victorian Novel, p. 179). A Haycraft Queen Cornerstone.

One of the best detective novels I have ever read. This book is a precursor to all detective classics in English. The style of writing is unique, the way the narration begins and accounts of each and every character that are involved in the plot, is one of the first of its kind. This is a must read book for all those who are interested in detective novels.
