Sobre este artículo

HarperCollinsPublishers, (1995). First Edition, stated. Octavo, black boards (hardcover), silver letters, xvi, 640 pp. Fine (As New) in a Fine (As New) dust jacket. From dust jacket: The music of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart is civilization’s sign for consolation and beauty, but he himself was beset by sadness and loss. At a tender age he became the family provider, the source of its status and economic well-being. But to justify his exploitation as a child prodigy, he was burdened with the charge that he was incapable of caring for himself. What Maynard Solomon calls “the myth of the eternal child,” was used to keep him in subjection to his family’s interests, until at last his need to be a separate individual triggered his flight from Salzburg to Vienna in 1781, inaugurating a decade of supreme masterworks but resulting in his alienation from his father, sister, and hometown. This pathbreaking and moving biography traces Mozart’s attempts to counterbalance these losses. A powerful new portrait of him emerges as, with rare psychological insight, Solomon maps the “zones of freedom” -- music, play, language, eroticism, love, marriage, friendship, Freemasonry, a carnivalesque attitude, and a replacement family at the end -- that Mozart staked out in the course of his quest for autonomy. Mozart: A Life is based on an unsurpassed knowledge of the documentary sources, including numerous documents that have not previously appeared in any biography of the composer. It offers a beautifully written and absorbing narrative of Mozart’s life, from his birth in 1756 and childhood in Salzburg to the extraordinary decade of acclaimed performances in the capitals of Europe, where he was honored by royal families and adoring audiences, to his emergence as a prolific young composer, his status as Salzburg’s favorite son in the 1770s, his conquest of Vienna, his marriage there, his financial vicissitudes, his later journeys to Prague and Germany, his deepening melancholia, his final triumphs, and his premature death in 1791. Narrative chapters alternate with rich and imaginative in-depth exploration of issues crucial to understanding Mozart...
