The son of a Philadelphia policeman, Gola attended LaSalle College and led them to an NIT championship in 1952 and the NCAA chamionship in 1954. He is considered one of the greatest NCAA basketball players of all time. As a professional, his rookie year was with the Philadelphia Warriors of where he helped the team win the NBA championship in 1956. He was named an All Star five times before retiring in 1966 and was elected to the Basketball hall of Fame in 1976. After his playing days, Gola served as a Pennslyvania state representative then Philadelphia city controller. For this definitive biography, the author drew on his exclusive 2013 interviews with Gola as well as stories and anecdotes by such basketball and Philly legends as John Chaney, Fran Dunphy, and Lionel Simmons.
