The book provides an in-depth look into the life of Samuel Bronfman, the creator of the Seagram whiskey empire. Samuel Bronfman's story is a classic rags-to-riches tale. His father initially failed as a wheat farmer but found success selling frozen fish, firewood, and horses. Young Sam observed that the bar made more profits than they did and suggested they should be selling drinks instead. This marked the beginning of what was to become the Seagram whiskey empire. Bronfman's success in penetrating the American market was such that after Prohibition, his competitors lobbied the federal government for his protection. The book also covers the passing on of the vast Seagram enterprise to the leadership of his sons, Edgar and Charles. While Samuel Bronfman's story is a tale of business success, it also sheds light on his life as a Jew who remained in many ways outside business and social establishments even after becoming internationally famous. He was a private individual whose life centered on his family and their home in Montreal.
