The 4th of a planned series of 11 titles in this series, from this author, favourably compared to Patrick O'Brien and Alexander Kent, hence the first two books are fast becoming harder to find.
'Mutiny',the fourth book in the acclaimed Thomas Kydd series, continues the magnificient tale of one man's journey from pressed man to Admiral in the Great Age of Sail.
It is 1797 and Kydd is now master's mate on Achilles,a 64-gun ship-of-the-line,returning from the Caribbean to England. But the Mediterranean has been evacuated by the British and Kydd's ship is diverted to Gibraltar to be part of the defences of the fabled Rock.
There,he is reunited with his enigmatic,high-born friend Nicholas Renzi. In an attempt to win the heart of a lady,Kydd volunteers to join his tie-mate and others on a dangerous voyage on the frigate Bacchante.Their mission is to rescue a diplomat fleeing over the Alps in the wake of French victories. In Venice, against the backdrop of the tumultuous last days of La Serissima Republica and Buonaparte's imminent conquest, their chances of success look slim. Kydd finally sets sail for England,longed-for after many years' absence, and finds himself at the centre of one of the most extraordinary events in English history - the Mutiny at the Nore.Ten thousand men, one thousand guns and scores of ships hold the country to ransom, the government is near collapse, the economy on the brink of ruin. And the Dutch fleet at Texel now threatens the very survival of England; should they prevail the country will be lost to the French in hours. In the bloody Battle of Camperdown that ensues, the sailors experience all the horror of a major fleet action. This book is based on dramatic true events that have seldom been written about before and are here brought thrillingly to life.
