Owner's scribbled-out signature on front endpaper. Plates are foxed and lightly stained on the edges. Otherwise, text unmarked and binding tight. This is the first edition, first state of this work by William Dean Howells, with the photographer's name in the lower left corner of the Twain frontispiece. See BAL 9803.
