In the original cloth First edition of Collins's collection of essays and short stories, initially appearing between 1856 and 1861 in Charles Dickens's periodicals Household Words and All The Year Round. Two volumes, octavo. Original green diagonal-wide-bead-grain cloth, spine lettered in gilt. W. H. Smith blindstamp to front free endpaper (as with the Sadleir copy), bookplate to front pastedowns of Oliver Brett, 3rd Viscount Esher (1881-1963), son of the Governor of Windsor Castle. Worn at extremities, loss to top corner of front cover of vol. I, some foxing. A good copy. Gasson pp. 111-112; Parrish pp. 51-53; Sadleir, XIX Century Fiction, 599; Wolff 1369.
