And from then on nothing was the same; and in almost all the mysterious happenings, somehow or other the children were involve - so deeply, indeed, that it led to danger for Livvy and Kim, and the 'worst dressing-down of our lives' for them all. Livvy, the oldest and therefore Head of the Family, tells the story, and manages to convey to the reader all the suspense and excitement of their adventures.

This is a mystery for the Bobbsey Twins set. There is no murder but the three Taylor children, Livvy, Richard, and Sally, put themselves in stranger-danger when they visit an abandoned inn in the woods not far from their home.
Sally is a budding artist and she plans to enter an art contest with her sketch of the inn. While visiting the inn the children meet Kim, a girl on school holiday; Mary and Hugh, an adult brother and sister; and Peter, a man who says that he is vacationing nearby in his gypsy caravan. After Sally finds a silver ring, some mysterious things happen inside and outside of the inn but the children keep all of this secret from their parents. This is a mystery that they want to solve on their own and they know that no responsible parent would allow them go back to the inn.
