Adah Isaacs Menken was an American actress, painter and poet, and was the highest earning actress of her time. She was born on June 15, 1835 in Memphis, TN and died on August 10, 1868 in Paris, France. Menken was best known for her performance in the hippodrama Mazeppa, with a climax that featured her apparently nude and riding a horse on stage!. She was infamous for her affairs and this book fearlessly tells of her relationships with Bret Harte, Mark Twain, Walt Whitman, Charles Dickens, Algernon Charles Swinburne, Dante Rossetti, Alexandre Dumas pere, Theophile Gautier, and George Sand.
