Illustrated with folding map at end and numerous plates. 1 vols. 8vo. "One of the fundamental books on Arctic exploration" (Hill). Back volunteered to search for the lost Ross expedition. Here he describes his trip through north central Canada down the Slave to Great Slave Lake, then to the Great Fish River (which he discovered) and finally to the Arctic Coast. He makes important observations of the Aurora Borealis here, too. It was on this journey that Back named Montreal Island. 'As a literary composition this work may rank higher than any former volume produced by the Northern expeditions' (Lande).
