Contemporary brown calf. 178 pp. Boards slightly bowed, leather rubbed and scuffed, some soiling and staining. Lacks front free endpapers. Hinges cracked. Interior age toned, some substantial damp staining. Ink stains to p. 67 with some text slightly obscured. Pencil annotations to title page and rfep. Occasional chipping to margins and creasing to lower corners. To which is added the "sermon, preached at her funeral, and that of her mother, with sundry other interesting articles." Susannah Willard Johnson [1730-1810] was captured in New Hampshire in the Abenaki Indian Raid. The Johnsons were sold into slavery of the French, after marching four weeks from New England to Quebec at the start of the Franco-Indian War. Her account was first printed in 1796, and underwent subsequent revisions until her death in 1810. Ayer 121.
