London: For T. Egerton By W. Lewis, 1809. Octavo. xiii, 9-133pp. (1)pp. errata. Henry Milburne, entered the Peninsular War in 1808 as a surgeon in the Spanish forces. He was a member of the Royal College of Surgeons. He had originally joined the 52nd royal Battalion as a Hospital-Mate before promoted to assistant surgeon in the York Rangers (1804-08), he was so shocked by Napoleon's invasion of Spain that he traveled to join the Spanish to help those who were suffering by the cruelty of Napoleon. He was becoming expert on treating gunshot wounds. He had tried unsuccessfully to join the British expeditionary force to Portugal and was rejected also by the Spanish officials in London. This work deals with the cruelty of war and especially those inflicted by the French. Bound in a contemporary polished maroon calf over marbled paper covered boards, handsomely rebacked with original spine laid down, green morocco spine label gilt, other compartments ruled and decorated in gilt, all edges gilt, endpapers renewed.
