A. O. P. Nicholson, Washington, 1856. First Edition, House of Representatives Issue. Hardcover. Very Good Condition/No Dust Jacket. Size: 11 3/4" x 9 3/4". 3-volume set (complete). Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Three volumes bound with blind-stamped cloth over boards, Vols. I & III in brown, Vol. II in black, all three have gilt -stamping on spines with "House Reps." at the head of the spines and "Navy Department" at the foot. Vol. I: pp. xvii, [1], 537; extensively illustrated with 82 color lithographs (includes the suppressed nude bathing litho), 6 engraved maps, 2 of which are folding, 4 tinted engravings of a waterwheel and ships, and 3 color plates of reproduced Japanese art, 2 of which are folding, also includes numerous in-text illustrations. Vol. II: pp. [8], 414, [4], 14 (this section is numbered backwards because it is a facsimile of the treaty in Japanese), xi, [1]; illustrated with 9 color lithographs, 18 engravings (12 in color), 16 barometric charts, 2 folding maps, plus 14 folding maps at the rear. Vol. III: pp. xliii, 705; illustrated with wood engravings of star charts on nearly every other page. A detailed account of Matthew C. Perry's expedition to open Japan to the West. Many of the lithographic illustrations are reproduced from some of the earliest photographs taken of Japan.
