Contemporary half calf over marbled boards. 9 full page lithographed illustration plus engraved vignettes in the text. Armorial bookplate of Cranstoun of Corehouse. A very good copy. "These travels were actually undertaken in 1805-6, but Gell decided to publish them in 1823 in order to combat the growing philhellenic sentimentality about Greece and the Greeks. He wanted to show what Greece was really like before the revolution. In his preface he says '...those who have never witnessed the effects of habit, on persons educated in a state of political slavery, are apt to be too certain that their own feelings are echoed by the sentiments of such victims as those who are now engaged in the struggle.' The plates include views of Mega Spileon, Navarino, Mistra, Orchomenos, Arcadia (Kyparissia)" (Blackmer). (Blackmer, 665).
