S. Horsey. In 1836 fishermen began snagging their nets on the seabed in the Solent. A diver from Gosport, Henry Abbinett was hired by them to investigate what was down there. He was the first to see the wreckage of the Royal George and then in the distance, Tudor flagship, The Mary Rose. He brought in two experienced divers, John Deane, and William Edwards. They had more advanced kit and in particular breathing apparatus that they had honed initially for firefighting. They recovered several timbers from both wreckage sites and a bronze gun from the Mary Rose. Rumblings were afoot between the parties as the fishermen, Abbinett and the two divers all laid claim to ownership of what they recovered. The Admiralty had to step in at this point. Admiral Codrington was Commander in Chief Portsmouth and made the decision that the two divers could claim ownership of most of what they recovered, with a percentage going to other parties. In 1840 they continued and with help used explosives to dislodge the mast of the Mary rose along with securing more guns. The mast would be chopped up and there were also trinkets recovered. Most of the items recovered have made their way to museums and guns from the Mary Rose are currently in the Tower of London. A publisher, Samuel Horsey of Portsea bought timber from both wreckage sites and used them to bound books about the ships themselves. The two books are bound by the wreckage from both ships along with a letter from Admiral Codrington. His letter is to Private Secretary to William IV, Sir Herbert Taylor asking if a surgeon in the 99th regiment could be given an office job rather than continue serving in the field. Admiral Codrington served as one of Nelson's captains in the blockade of Cadiz and then Battle of Trafalgar. In relation to the two books, he mediated and gave permission for the divers to continue to go to the wreckage sites in 1840. He is the dedicatee in the Mary Rose book, such was his influence in reclaiming the timber to make the books. Details of the books and letter are as follows: 1. A Narrative of the Loss of the H.M.S Royal George at Spithead. Published in 1840 Second Edition. Bound from the wreckage. 90 pages frontispiece and two plates in the text uncoloured. Frontispiece glued to the inside board. The text is clean crisp and tightly bound. 2. A Narrative of the Loss of the Mary Rose. 96 pages. Published in 1844 Second Edition. Bound from the wreckage of the Mary Rose. Has a contemporary label to the front board. Text is clean and all pages intact along with original end papers. 3. A three-page letter from Mary Rose Relic book dedicatee Admiral Edward Codrington to Sir Herbert Taylor personal secretary to William IV. The books and letter are all in near fine condition overall. A remarkable set involving relics from the Mary Rose and HMS Royal George along with a letter from the Admiral that allowed recovery of items from the wreckage to take place.   . Near Fine. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1st Printing. 1844.

Chatto & Windus. First UK edition published by Chatto & Windus in 1930. This is a very good or better copy. The wrapper has small amounts of loss to the top and bottom of the spine. There are two splits to the edge of the inside flap. There is a couple of small chips to the corners along with a tear to the inside lower flap. There are two tiny holes to the spine. Overall though, the jacket is fairly complete and not price clipped. The panels are clean and without marks. The book is in excellent condition, with only a bumped top corner for wear and some light sporadic foxing to the side text block. The dark green top stain is bright and the pages are very clean. Overall a very good or better copy.  Faulkner's first novel, originally published in the US in 1926, it wouldn't be until 1930 that it was published in the UK and most likely in a small print run. Stanley Nott. First edition published by Stanley Nott in 1935. This is a very good or better copy. The orange dust wrapper with black lettering is complete with only minor wear along the edges. There is no loss and it is not price clipped. The spine is faded. The book is square and tight. The corners are gently pushed. There is light and sporadic foxing that becomes moderate to 3 or 4 pages. Overall a very good or better copy. A book Ezra Pound struggled to get published due to its fascist overtones. Pound compares US democracy with capitalism and facism. He then draws comparisons between fascist prime minister of Italy Benito Mussolini and the US third president Thomas Jefferson. Pound had been living in Italty for some years by this point and had met Mussolini in 1933. A controversial book, Pound's views would continue to be aired, in particular with radio broadcasts, and it would culminate with his imprisonment by the US Army in 1945. Author Dennis Wheatley's copy with his elaborate bookplate to the reverse of the upper wrapper. Errata slip in place on the first page. opposite the contents page Noel coward has signed without dedication along with Gladys Calthrop as Hernia Whittlebot. William Heinemann. First trade edition published by William Heinemann in 1912. The play made its debut on the stage in 1903. Maugham got 150 copies of his play printed in 1903 to give it out on opening night and as working copies for the actors. This first trade edition appeared in 1912 in wraps and this hardback edition. This copy is in very good condition. The boards have a couple of bumps along the right hand side edge of the front board. The spine is faded. There is a light mark to the front board. Otherwise the boards and pages are clean and there are no other marks, bookplates, foxing or ink. It is at least a very good copy overall. The author, W. Somerset Maugham has inscribed to the front free end paper "For Robert Loraine, from his friend the author". Robert Bilcliffe Loraine was a stage actor and producer. He appeared in one of Somerset Maugham's plays "Smith" in 1909 and from the inscription seemed to be on very good terms with him. Loraine would also go on… Leer más

Macmillan. London: Macmillan (1918). 8vo., original blue cloth boards, elaborately ruled and decorated to gilt on upper board and spine with a rose motif by Sturge Moore; with the original dust jacket; pp. [vi], v-94, [ii]; A very good copy. The jacket hasn't been price clipped. Slight bumping to corners and pushing to head and foot of spine. The jacket is creased in places, particularly to inner front flap and edges; spine stained and a little chipped to head and foot, and one small brown spot to lower panel. A fresh copy in the rare original dust wrapper.  One of only 1500 copies printed. By 1917, the poet saw a need to explain his mystical perspective to his readers. Per Amica therefore was written by Yeats in an attempt to rectify this. Yeats called it a little philosophical book. Within the pages is his poem Ego Dominus Tuus along with a primer of his views in two parts Anima Homins and Anima Mundi.  [Lickindorf].  . Very… Leer más
