Sobre este artículo

Boston: Published for the Author, 1875. First Edition thus. Used; Like New/Used; Like New. 2 parts in 1 vol., 8vo (190 x 120 mm). Half-title, engraved frontispiece portrait; offsetting to frontis., scattered thumbsoiling and toning, newspaper clipping of her obituary laid down on rear endpapers with accompanying browning and old adhesive; modern reproduction carte-de-visite of Sojourner Truth laid down on front paste-down. Publisher's black cloth with gilt portrait of Truth to upper cover; heavily restored and worn, retaining most of the original covers, and part of the spine.
The present work, a revised and expanded biography of the noted abolitionist Sojourner Truth, belonged to George Gage, a prominent citizen in Reconstruction-era Beaufort, South Carolina. Gage was a civil engineer born in McConnelsville, Ohio who moved to Beaufort to work as a surveyor. While working on the railroad construction project from Augusta to Beaufort, he developed an interest in vocational training for the formerly enslaved. His wife, Sarah Marshall Ely, was an abolitionist and social activist who taught in the newly established segregated Freedmen's Bureau schools (Duke University Libraries). The gift inscription on the front paste-down, seemingly also in Gage's hand, states: "Geo. Gage, from Uncle John and Aunt Portia. January 1876." Uncle John and Aunt Portia's identities are unknown, although intriguingly, the use of the titles "Uncle" and "Aunt" indicates the book may have been a gift from members of the African American community that the Gages worked with.

As members of PADA, ABAA and ILAB, we guarantee that all items we sell are authentic and as represented and described. But our guarantee is more than that: as lovers and purveyors of rare books and documents that speak to us across time, this is a fundamental value of our business. We do not offer for sale any items which we do not believe in 100% as to do otherwise would be a betrayal of our values. Unless sold "on approval" by advance agreement in writing, should a client at any point have authenticity concerns about an item purchased from us, we require any return request to be accompanied by THREE written opinions against the authenticity of the item in question. If the claim is in regards to an autograph, at least one opinion must be from a member of the Professional Autograph Dealers Association (a guide by specialization is posted on the PADA website). We do not accept returns under any other circumstances. All purchases made from Schubertiade Music & Arts LLC (through the website, by phone or email, or through any other sales outlet) constitute the purchaser's consent to these terms.
