After the Hundred Days, the Corsican ogre had requested (and expected) to be transported to exile in the United States. Happenstance led to Maitland intercepting Napoleon at Rochefort-sur-Mer, near the Bay of Biscay. He and his retinue of 33 were held on Maitland's ship for 30 days while the British determined his fate. Thus, prior to being transported to St. Helena, Maitland and Napoleon shared many repasts, by which the Captain became thoroughly bewitched by Napoleon's charm.
