Alaska Map Supplement is NOT PRESENT. Cover has wear and soiling. Spine has some chipping. Damp stain on front cover and several interior pages. National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. This issue includes: Alaska's Warmer Side with 38 Illustrations (29 in Natural Colors) by Elsie May Bell Grosvenor; Alaska, the Big Land with 27 Illustrations (22 in Natural Colors) by W. Robert Moore; Photographing Northern Wild Flowers with 26 Illustrations (21 in Natural Colors) by Virginia A. Wells; Trieste--Side Door to Europe with Map and 28 Illustrations (19 in Natural Colors) by Harnett T. Kane and B. Anthony Steward; Solving Life Secrets of the Sailfish with 18 Illustrations (5 Painting in color) by Gilbert Voss, Craig Phillips, and B. Anthony Stewart; and Cyprus, Geography's Stepchild with Map and 13 Illustrations by Franc Shor. Harnett Thomas Kane (November 8, 1910 - September 4, 1984) was an author of some thirty books of Louisiana and southern history, geography, culture, and fiction. Elsie was the granddaughter of the Society's principal founder and first president, Gardiner Greene Hubbard; the daughter of its second president, Alexander Graham Bell; the wife of long-time president and editor, Gilbert Hovey Grosvenor; the mother of the next president-editor, Melville Bell Grosvenor; and the grandmother of an ensuing president-editor-chairman, Gilbert M. Grosvenor.
