Some damp stains noted. National Geographic is the official magazine of the National Geographic Society. It has been published continuously since its first issue in 1888, nine months after the Society itself was founded. It primarily contains articles about geography, history, and world culture. The magazine is known for its extensive use of dramatic photographs. The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. This issue includes: Wisconsin, Land of the Good Life with Map and 36 Illustrations (29 in color) by Beverley M. Bowie and Volkmar Wentzel; Charting our Sea and Air Lanes with Maps and 22 Illustrations (18 in Color) by Stuart E. Jones and J. Baylor Roberts; Roman Life in 1,600-year-old Color Pictures With 20 Illustrations (14 in Color) by Gino Vinicio Gentili and Duncan Edwards; Along the Storied Incense Roads of Aden with Maps and 18 Illustrations by Hermann F. Eilts and Brian Brake; and Dinkelsbuhl Rewards Its Children with Map and 14 Illustrations in Color by Charles Belden; and To 76,000 Feet by Strato-Lab Balloon with 15 Illustrations by Malcolm D. Ross and M. Lee Lewis, T. J. Abercrombie, and R. F. Sisson. Malcolm David Ross (1919 - 1985) was a captain in the U. S. Naval Reserve, an atmospheric scientist, and a balloonist who set several records for altitude, with more than 100 hours flight time in gas balloons by 1961. With another, he set the altitude record for a manned balloon flight.
