The magazine is published monthly, and additional map supplements are also included with subscriptions. On occasion, special editions of the magazine are issued. The first issue of National Geographic Magazine was published on September 22, 1888, nine months after the Society was founded. John Hyde was the first editor. This issue includes: Sinbads of Science: The Narrative of a Windjammer's Voyage Among Islands of High Adventure in the South Atlantic by George Finlay Simmons with 87 illustrations, and Strange Habits of Familiar Moths and Butterflies by William Joseph Showalter with 44 Illustrations.
