A stunningly clean & bright copy of the Third Edition (1884) of this classic work in natural history & ornithology, which originally appeared in 1789. This edition, "thoroughly revised, with additional notes,'' also contains 10 letters (to Thomas Pennant, Esq. & the Honourable Daines Barrington) not included in any previous edition, as well as fresh illustrations in the form of engravings by Thomas Bewick & others throughout the 568 pages. A Preface by James Edmund Harting from 1874 & the original Advertisement to the First Edition are included. With bright red cloth-covered boards & faded gilt design to front & spine, this hardcover is in VG condition: extremely clean, binding straight & strong; a bit of mottling to rear board & a few tiny dark spots there. Pages modestly tanned, heavier around edges, but very supple. Heavier foxing in front matter & all endpapers. Foldout that precedes the section "The Naturalist's Calendar" is as pristine & crisp as if never opened! Gilt to all outside page edges is bright, marbled endpapers clean. NO writing/underlining/highlighting; NOT ex-lib. A stunning copy of a book beloved by British birders for centuries!
