London: printed for T. Lowndes, No 77, in Fleet-Street, and S. Bladon, in Paternoster-Row, 1779. Half-Calf. Fine. Small 8vo: [4],107,[3]pp, with a frontispiece and 23 further full-page copper-engraved plates, each showing the cock, hen, and (often) egg of a different songbird. Without the final leaf of advertisements. Recently rebound to period style by Fitterer in half calf, spine in six compartments between raised bands, black morocco lettering piece gilt, marbled boards, end papers renewed. A Fine copy, inside and out, the many plates in rich, dark impressions. Zimmer, p. 3 (incorrectly identifying the format as 12mo). Lowndes 25. Anker 7. Mullens, p. 14 (noting that this New Edition appeared with both colored and uncolored plates). Albin illustrated (and probably wrote) this book on English song birds, which first appeared in 1737; ESTC records seven editions, culminating with this "new edition corrected." Along with denizens of hedgerow and hillside, the author offered information on a domestic favorite in a lengthy section on canaries, here newly expanded, including advice on choosing a bird. Originally produced in a small edition, available in both a luxury colored issue and an issue with black-and-white plates, this later edition features mirror images of the plates from the second edition. It also claims to be the first such work to depict birds' eggs. Albin's opus, A Natural History of Birds (1731), was the first ornithological text to use colored plates, and made him one of the first successful compilers of profusely illustrated natural history books for the general reader. N. B. With few exceptions (always identified), we only stock books in exceptional condition. All orders are packaged with care and posted promptly. Satisfaction guaranteed.

LONDON: George Bell & Sons, 1870 A nice set of the second edition of Morris's History of British Birds. In 6 volumes with original decorative cloth bindings and 365 hand coloured plates as called for. The bindings are all clean with bright gilt pictures of birds to each front board and gilt titles and decoration to spine. There is some wear: volume I has some cloth splitting at the hinges and splitting at the rear endpaper with rubbing to corners; volumes II, III and IV have very slight pulling to top and bottom of spine and a little rubbing at corners; volume V has very small splits at the top and bottom of the spine; and volume VI has a 1 inch tear at the top of the spine (with no loss) and scuffing at the corners. Internally all have the original endpapers; the first section including the frontispiece is becoming loose on volumes I, II, and III; volume IV is sound but the stitching is looser than on the others. There is a little spotting to some plates and text pages but in general the… Leer más

ABOUT THIS BOOK: From the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of The Gulf, a sweeping cultural and natural history of the bald eagle in America. The bald eagle is regal but fearless, a bird you're not inclined to argue with. For centuries, Americans have celebrated it as "majestic" and "noble," yet savaged the living bird behind their national symbol as a malicious predator of livestock and, falsely, a snatcher of babies. ILLUSTRATED COMPREHENSIVE STUDY OF ADAPTATIONS OF BIRDS FOR BREEDING BY EXPERT ON DARWIN'S FINCHES. 10 inches tall mauve cloth binding, gilt title to spine, unmarked, very good in good price-clipped dust jacket with edge tears. From dust jacket: "The primary aim of this book is an interpretation of the main adaptations of birds for breeding-whether a species lests solitarily or in colonies, whether it is monogamous or has several mates, the lumber of eggs that it lays, the relative size of its eggs, the rate of development of its eggs and young, and the age at which it first breeds. This book is the first comprehensive survey of these points that has been made, so readers can see what is known, and what emains to be discovered, and hence may be stimulated to add to knowledge. However it is much more than a summary of the facts, for these various adaptations have been interpreted in terms of natural selection, and the author has suggested how each of… Leer más
