Illustrated with two plain and four hand-coloured lithograph plates, an extra lithographed vignette title page, 12mo, (measures 164 x 105 mm), pp 82, all edges gilt, very clean internally, red blind-stamped cloth with gilt circular motif on the upper cover, slightly rubbed, with very slight wear to the spine head and the top of the upper joint. RARE. From the library of the alpine nurseryman Will Ingwersen, with his bookplate on the front endpaper. [The first book in English to deal with alpine gardening. Twenty-five years later it attracted the sarcasm of William Robinson. This is the true first edition of 1845. There was a re-issue around fifteen years later - this is distinguishable only in the shape and design of the gilt wreath on the upper cover. Illustrated, small octavo, pp xii, 176, fore-edge slightly foxed, a signature on the front endpaper and an owner's small book label (beneath the d.w. flap), otherwise very clean internally, green cloth with a very slight suggestion of fade along the top edge; the dustwrapper is not price-clipped, it is slightly worn along its top edge, and a little soiled on its rear cover, the spine is a little faded and age-toned. . First Edition. Cloth. Very Good/Slightly worn and faded.

Winchester: Published by the author, 1891. Quarto, pp (4), 22, + 224 hand-coloured plates, the text and the first plate just slightly foxed, otherwise very clean internally, all edges gilt and slightly discoloured, blue cloth with green lettering and a simple gilt floral motif, the spine dull and very slightly worn at top and bottom, the spine and the lower cover slightly spotted and slightly unevenly faded. Several internal hinges are a little open but not in any way weak. The plates are simply drawn but quite satisfying. [The author was a vicar at Sparsholt, near Winchester. His drawings are lodged at the British Museum (N.H.)]. First Edition. Cloth. Good.

Lugduni Batavorum: Westenium, 1769. Latin text throughout. Title page, dedication leaf, pp 506, (ii), with seven engraved folding plates and one folding table, (slight damage to the margin of the ornithological plate), a little age-toning generally, endpapers unevenly browned, but otherwise very clean internally, bound in full contemporary polished calf, slight wear at the corners, joints cracking slightly, lacking a small piece at the head of the spine. [The students whose names appear on the dissertations were not necessarily their authors; it was their function to present the dissertation and defend it in public debate, but the responsibility for the content of the dissertation was largely that of the professor, in this case Linnaeus. The fact that Linnaeus cited the Amoenitates as the place of publication for plant names he credited to himself indicates that he was generally the principal author of the work.
