The book is in six parts: In the Cocos-Keeling Islands; In Java; In Sumatra; In the Moluccas and in Timor-Laut; and In Timor. Each part has an appendix.

Publisher's green pictorial cloth gilt. 8 3/4 x 5 1/2 inches; xix, 536, 4 pp.; 3 folding maps, 2 full-page maps, 1 in-text map, color frontispiece, plates, in-text illustrations, publisher's advertisements. Color tissue guarded frontispiece by J.B. Gibbs. 6 maps in total all present. First American edition.

Bindings are tight and square. Minor shelf lean. Text clean, light even toning. Moderate shelf handling wear. Light wear to extremities, lightly and evenly toned throughout. Collectible condition.. The British zoologist H.O. Forbes (1851-1932) travelled from the Keeling Islands through Indonesia between 1878-1883. He visited Java, South-Sumatra, the Moluccas and New Guinea. Giving in addition to a general travel-account, special ethnographic information of the little known inhabitants of the Timor and the Tanimbar Islands.

Descripción:
The Scottish zoologist H.O. Forbes (1851-1932) travelled from the Keeling Islands through Indonesia between 1878-1883 visiting The Cocos Islands, West Java, South-Sumatra, Timor, Ambon, Larat (one of the Tanimbar Islands), and Buru. Forbes was active primarily in the Moluccas, Sumatra and New Guinea. His unusual tasks there also included tracking down the murderers of Captain J. C. Craig on Joannet Island in his temporary capacity as a government agent. In 1887 he was appointed meteorological observer at Port Moresby in New Guinea and used this opportunity to attempt further exploration of the island interior. The map he made from these explorations was deemed "unreliable" and he was not paid for his efforts. Disgruntled he decided to return to Britain. However he made a major stay in New Zealand before achieving this.
He served as Director of the Canterbury Museum in New Zealand between 1890 and 1893, and eventually moved to Liverpool, England, where he served as a consulting Director of Museums… Leer más

There is a 4 page tissue type paper in the center listing the Schedule of Events. The cover states, UNITED STATES SHIP JOHN S. McCAIN (DDG 56) with the McCain Family Crest in the center Commissioning July 2, 1994 Bath, Maine. Inside front cover explains the symbolism of the Crest. Inside back cover has the Navy Hymn. The softcover is somewhat dirty with an ink mark and a paperclip indent. Inside Near Fine. Also includes a bifold 4 page Contributor's Brochure which is very worn along the foredge from being inserted into the booklet - same size.
