John Morton was an English farmowner and the land agent of the second Earl of Ducie. He spent a significant portion of his life living in Gloucestershire, where he made many of his observations and concepts on soils and rock formations as independent of each other. This work is one of the earliest on modern geographical and soil science, in which he discusses the classifications of soil and their related geological formations.
