A plate from John Gabriel Stedman's "Narrative of a Five Years' Expedition against the Revolted Slaves of Surinam" (London: Joseph Johnson, 1796). This book, with its graphic depiction of slavery and colonization in the New World, became an important reference for early abolitionists.<br/><br/> This disturbing image shows a man impaled by a hook and hanging from a gallows. A human skull and bones occupy the foreground, and the background shows two skulls on sticks and a three-masted ship. <br><br> William Blake (1757-1827) was a British poet, painter, and printmaker.<br/><br/>
