Sobre este artículo
Washington, D.C.: The Associated Publishers Inc, 1939. First edition. 8vo, [x], 1-371pp. Photographic illustrations throughout. Signed and inscribed by Henderson to Clyde McDuffie and dated in 1939 on the ffep. Maroon cloth stamped in black, nearly fine with some light use at corners and spine ends, scattered foxing to preliminaries else clean internally.
Wonderful association copy of this landmark work from the "Father of Black Basketball," educator, and NAACP pioneer, Edwin Henderson (1883-1977). Henderson was instrumental in introducing basketball and other physical ed. programs, including the improvement of facilities, to African American students in Washington D.C. There he served as the first black physical education teacher in the District of Columbia.
This copy warmly inscribed to Clyde [C.] McDuffie, a D.C. resident and educator in the prestigous Black Dunbar H.S. who was an active voice in the segregation era, speaking out through letters. Perhaps the most well known of these is his note to the secretary of the interior, Harold Ickes, in 1938 criticizing segregation in the Shenandoah National Park which lead to the launch of an internal reinvestigation of that practice in National Parks, planting the seeds for future change.
The first edition, which was closely followed by a second, revised edition, is quite uncommon, and especially signed. .
