Rudd & Carleton, 1859. First Edition. Hardcover. 433 pages with publisher's new book catalogue. The book is a fictionalized account of travel by the first City Physician of San Francisco, in 1848, and later a surgeon in the East India Company's services. Cowan, Bibliography of the History of California, p. 471: 'His sketches are rather different than those of many of his fellow sojourners.' A very good copy in reddish-brown cloth covers with spine ends bumped, some shelfwear to corners and fraying to lower spine edge. All illustrations are present with 2 located on pages different from that indicated in book. Former owner bookplate and inscription dated 1860.
