Boston: Swan, Brewer and Tileston, 1861. Nearly a century and a half old, this Second Class Reader is in Very Good condition (click on photo). The full title is as follows: "A Second Class Reader; Consisting of Extracts, in Prose and Verse, for the Use of the Second Classes in Public and Private Schools, with an Introductory Treatise on Reading and the Training of the Vocal Organs." The book is bound in black cloth covered boards with a black leather spine. The edges and spine tips are well rubbed, as shown in photo. As for the interior, the book is tightly and securely bound. Although there's a small food stain on the Contents page, the text pages themselves are amazingly bright and clean, with none of the foxing problems one normally expects in a volume this old. The book has a signature from the original owner on the front free endpaper, and the rear free endpaper is missing. The book measures 5 by 7 1/2 inches and contains 278 pages. . Hard Cover. Boston: Taintor Brothers, Merrill & Co., 1878. Hardcover. Good. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 144pp. Paper over boards, black backing. Light soiling to boards, very liittle wear, contents are age-toned but clean and unmarked, and evidently little if ever used, unusual for a sdhool book of this age. Illustrated. Several illustrations have been neatly hand colored.

Title page from another copy of the same title glued to front pastedown, shallow loss and tear at the crown (affecting text) with small chips at the foot of the spine, good only.

182 p., no end blanks but otherwise appears complete. Some pencil marks made by a child. Cover cosmetically well worn but study. Pages dampstained. Fair+ to good condition.
