New York: Baker and Scribner, 1850. This antique hardcover book is bound in green cloth boards, with gilt spine lettering. Heavy edgewear, especially at lower spine where small portion of cloth has chipped loose; bookplate on front inner board; intermittent foxing throughout, although many pages clean and unmarked. Simms' novel is set in 16th-century Florida among the French Huguenot colonists who once settled in that region. While The Lily and the Totem is a story of French Huguenots in sixteenth-century Florida, it is not, importantly, a historical romance. The structure of The Lily and the Totem reflects Simmss experiment, juxtaposing fictional narratives involving historical personages with historical summaries. (W. Matthew J. Simmons). 470 pages; approx. 5"x7".. Second…

Richard Bentley. Hardback. 344pp+324pp. Novel. Half bound in red leather with red, blue and yellow marbled papers on boards and matching marbled endpapers. Raised bands to spines with two maroon leather labels and gilt titles to each volume. Gilt to top edge. Also includes substantial essay, 38pp., on Ferrier, and Ferrier's Recollections of visits to Ashestiel and Abbotsford (home of Sir Walter Scott). A note on the text: "Miss Ferrier's novels have, since their first appearance, suffered curtailment in all subsequent editions. The present edition is the first reprint since from the original editions, and contains the whole of the omissions in other reprints." attributed to GB, New Burlington Street, presumably George Bentley son of the publishing founder, and subsequent partner. Bumpus binding signed in gilt to lower margin inside both rear boards is presumed slightly later than the contents. Maroon labels are perhaps from an earlier binding. Title label to volume II…
