Thick 8vo, modern green cloth, light dampstain to some pages mostly to margins, not affecting illustrations or maps, ex-lib, title-page creased, light foxing to most margins. New York: Appleton, 1856.<br/><br/> Complete with all the illustrations listed. Illustrations include: 20 lithograph plates, most of which are colored or tinted. One lithograph is the folding frontispiece in Vol. I. This double panorama has some foxing to the images, has a small tear in a fold at the bottom margin, and is creased on the left margin. All the other lithographs are foxed in the margins. 3 maps, 2 of which are folding. One of the folding maps is torn at several folds with no loss of text. The large folding map with routes for the proposed canal has some browning. 8 b/w plates. 60 b/w wood text engravings. In April 1849...(Ephraim George Squier) was appointed for a term of about a year and a half charge d'affaires to Central America. In this capacity he signed with Nicaragua an agreement for the American construction of an interoceanic canal. It was never ratified...(by the U. S. Senate).
