Vol. #20 in the International Psycho-Analytical Library edited by Jones, this is a FIRST EDITION, first printing, from Leonard & Virginia Woolf's Hogarth Press, 1931. It offers a psychoanalytic (Freudian) perspective on nightmares, linking them to medieval superstitions about vampires, werewolves, the devil, & witches, as well as to "infantile sexuality" & the "primordial conflict over incest." Extensive sections on etymology & the function of religion in understanding dreams. In 374 pages with a glossy Frontispiece depicting J. H. Fuseli's "The Nightmare" (1782), Author & General Indices, Preface, this hardcover 8vo is in VG-/Good+ condition: medium green cloth-covered boards lettered in gilt to spine show rubbing to extremities, heavier at both ends of spine & all corners. It is an Ex-Lib copy, with the usual stamps & markings (from Tulane University) in front & rear. Underlining & a few marginal notes in some chapters, else generally quite clean, binding strong & straight. Repair with clear tape to gutter where frontispiece meets title page.
